Involving & Supporting Carers

Evidence-based guidance — England & Wales

Educational resource only. Carer rights and service structures vary between NHS trusts and local authorities. Always refer to your trust's carer policy, the local Carer's Assessment pathway, and current legislation. This content reflects England and Wales law only.

Carers are essential partners in mental health care. The Triangle of Care framework (Carers Trust, 2013) recognises that the best outcomes occur when the service user, carer, and clinical team work together. The Care Act 2014 and Mental Health Act 1983 give carers specific legal rights. The NMC Code (2018) requires nurses to involve and support carers as part of person-centred care.
