Ethics, Safety & Professional Boundaries

This page explains clearly what PsychNurse Pro is, what it is not, and the professional responsibilities that apply to all users. Please read this before using the platform in any clinical context.

Important safety notice

PsychNurse Pro is an educational reference platform. It does not replace clinical judgement, local trust policy, or professional training. No information on this platform should be used as the sole basis for any clinical decision. If in doubt, always seek senior clinical advice and follow your trust's protocols.

What this platform is

A collation of the evidence base

PsychNurse Pro aggregates information from publicly available, peer-reviewed, and nationally recognised sources — including NICE guidelines, the BNF, NMC standards, NHS England frameworks, RCPsych guidance, MHRA documentation, and primary legislation (MHA 1983, MCA 2005, Care Act 2014). It brings these sources together in one accessible, searchable platform.

A legislative and regulatory reference

The platform provides a structured reference for the Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005, and related legislation applicable in England and Wales. It is designed to support nurses in understanding the legal framework within which they practise — not to provide legal advice.

An educational and revision tool

The quiz bank, clinical scenarios, and condition summaries are designed to support learning, revision for professional examinations, and continuing professional development. Content is mapped to NMC competencies and NMC revalidation requirements.

A CPD and revalidation support tool

The CPD Tracker and Reflective Journal are designed to help nurses document their learning and professional reflection in a format aligned with NMC revalidation requirements. The PDF export is intended to support — not replace — the formal NMC revalidation submission process.

What this platform is not

Not a substitute for clinical judgement

No information on this platform should be used as the sole basis for any clinical decision. Clinical practice requires the integration of evidence, professional expertise, patient values, and contextual factors that no digital platform can replicate. Always apply your professional judgement.

Not a clinical decision support system

PsychNurse Pro is not a clinical decision support system (CDSS) and has not been validated or approved for use in direct patient care. It does not generate patient-specific recommendations, risk assessments, or treatment plans.

Not a replacement for local trust policies

NHS trust policies, local formularies, and local care pathways take precedence over any information on this platform. Team names, service structures, medication protocols, and clinical thresholds vary significantly between trusts. Always refer to your local policies.

Not a source of legal advice

The legislative summaries on this platform are educational in nature. They do not constitute legal advice. For specific legal questions relating to the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, or any other legislation, consult your trust's legal team, the Mental Health Law Online resource, or a qualified solicitor.

Not a crisis or emergency resource

This platform is not designed for use in crisis or emergency situations. If you or a patient are in immediate danger, follow your trust's emergency protocols, contact emergency services (999), or use the NHS 111 service.

Not a peer-reviewed publication

While all content is sourced from peer-reviewed and nationally recognised references, PsychNurse Pro itself has not undergone formal peer review or clinical validation. It is a curated educational resource, not an academic publication.

Professional responsibilities

NMC Code compliance

Registered nurses using this platform remain fully responsible for their practice under the NMC Code. The platform supports professional development but does not alter or reduce the registrant's individual accountability for their clinical decisions and actions.

Patient safety first

Patient safety is paramount. If any information on this platform conflicts with your clinical training, local trust policy, or professional judgement, always defer to the safer course of action. Report any apparent inaccuracies using the Feedback portal.

Scope of practice

Content relating to non-medical prescribing, Nurse Approved Clinician (NAC) roles, and advanced practice is included for educational purposes. Nurses should only practise within their verified scope of practice and competence, as defined by their employer and the NMC.

Confidentiality and data protection

Do not enter patient-identifiable information into any field on this platform. The CPD Tracker and Reflective Journal are for professional reflection only. All user data is processed in accordance with UK GDPR. See the Privacy Policy for full details.

Evidence base and currency

All content on PsychNurse Pro is sourced from publicly available, nationally recognised references. The primary sources used are listed below. Where guidance has been updated since content was written, the platform may not immediately reflect the latest version. Users are responsible for verifying currency with the primary source.

Geographical scope: All content applies to England and Wales only. Scottish law (Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003), Northern Ireland legislation, and Republic of Ireland law are outside the scope of this platform.

Found an inaccuracy?

If you believe any content on this platform is inaccurate, outdated, or potentially unsafe, please report it immediately using the Feedback portal. All reports are reviewed by the author. Patient safety takes priority — do not wait for a formal response before taking appropriate clinical action.
